“This is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again”. These are the words of author Alexander McCall Smith describing the city he has lived in for most of his life.
Join me as I take you on a journey that will explore the development of this great city through words and images. From pre-historic settlement on castle rock, through expansion of settlement down the Royal Mile to the sophistication and grandeur of the Georgian New Town. I'll describe Edinburgh’s evolution through the stories of the characters that have called this great city home.
About a mile. The distance travelled back and forth by Royalty between their sumptuous accommodation in Holyrood Place and the protection of their medieval fortress on Castle Rock. Join this live virtual event as I explore the origins of one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. From a small settlement clustered around the Castle to the “Medieval Manhattan” that developed down the ridge of the Royal Mile, we’ll journey through Edinburgh’s history via images of its cityscape and the stories of some of its residents. As English poet John Taylor declared “the fairest and goodliest street that ever mine eyes beheld”. Come along and judge for yourself.
